Notes

Was appointed to the Bengal medical service in 1838 and upon arrival at Calcutta was temporarily installed as curator of the museum of the Asiatic Society of Bengal. After serving at Cawnpore, in 1842 he became Superintendent of the Botanic Gardens at Saharunpur, India, specialized in the cultivation of tea. He is largely credited with the development of Indian tea planting. He retired in December 1875 and returned to Scotland. [4]
